Forte Marghera is a historical military fortress in Mestre, 10 km from Venice, IT. We were invited by Live Arts Cultures as artists in residence at the C32 Gallery Space. During our stay we recorded Forte Marghera’s dynamic sonic environment and created a sound installation in an abandoned water tower.
In this installation we recorded the soundscape from inside the water tower’s resonant chamber and then played the recording back inside the space using a speaker and bass shaker. We then re-recorded the recording played back in the space. We repeated this process several times until the resonant frequencies were revealed.
We then played the final recording into the space and looped it. Inside the water tower the recording was loud and abrasive, but outside the drone blended in with the surrounding soundscape.
