Äänen Lumo organized a show for us in Vapaan Taiteen Tila, or ‘Free Space for Art,’ a former bomb shelter in the area of Sörnäinen, Helsinki. In collaboration with Adam Basanta we presented our most recent performance for horn, field recordings and incandescent light bulbs. We have been developing this piece over the past 2 years and have performed it in various resonant spaces (Mãe D’Água, Bain St-Michel and McGill MMR). We are excited to create new compositions and installations after this tour.
I remember every year my mom would take me to the farm house in Waskada Manitoba where she grew up. It was built in the early 1900’s and had been abandoned since the late 1950’s. Every time we would visit we would walk around the house, stare into the broken windows, and would sometimes walk in and explore. Old furniture and rubble were scattered amongst remnants of flower printed wallpaper and hardwood floor, and pigeons and other animals had made nests. As we explored the house, my mom would narrate her experience in the house as she had remembered it – and collect old wood and other objects to remember for later.

For the first time ever,improvisers will perform in a resonant acoustic environment that can be digitally modified in real time. McGill staff has studied the acoustics characteristics of various locations and have created software that allows performers to modify them in real time. John Butcher is an internationally known improvising saxophonist from the UK. Montreal guerrilla favourites Jen Reimer, Max Stein and Adam Basanta also perform. Audience members will be free to move around the space and take in the varying acoustic effects.

Since 2008, Jen Reimer and Max Stein have created a series of immersive audiovisual performances in challenging abandoned, public and transient locations, including underground tunnels, subway stations, high-traffic viaducts and abandoned warehouses in Montréal and abroad. Their talk will focus on their collaborative approach, past performances and installations, residencies and future projects.
SOUNDING THE CITY is part of a series of events coordinated with Sandeep Bhagwati and his colleagues from Matralab at Concordia University (Montreal), who will take part in a series of presentations and performances, culminating in a collaborative multimedia event on April 1.
